Rumour vs Tape London: Which Mayfair Night Suits You?

Last updated: 5 October 2026

Tape London and Rumour sit a few minutes apart in Mayfair and get compared constantly, usually by people deciding where to put a birthday. They are not competing for the same night. Here is how I actually split them.

Size Is the Whole Difference

Rumour holds around 200 people. Tape is a considerably larger room with a reputation built partly on its sound system and its scale. That single difference drives almost everything else.

At Tape you can be in the club and still choose your level of involvement — near the booth, off to the side, at a table slightly removed. At Rumour there is no removed. You are in the room, and so is everyone else.

The Music

Rumour plays open format: hip hop, RnB and house, read to whoever is in that night rather than committed to a lane. Tape is the better-known hip hop and RnB room and has the sound system to make that case.

If you care precisely what will be playing, Tape is the more predictable proposition. If you would rather the night follow the crowd, open format is the point rather than a hedge.

The Door and the Dress

Both are selective Mayfair doors and neither is a relaxed one. Rumour's is explicit: heels for ladies, smart and dressed up throughout, 18+.

The difference is in how much room each has to flex. A small venue applies its code more consistently because every group is visible. Plan for Rumour's door to be applied exactly as stated.

Guestlist and Tables

This is where the practical difference bites. Rumour's guestlist is for ladies, running from free to around £20 depending on the night, with no guestlist for men — mixed groups and groups of men need a table, from £1,000 minimum spend.

If your group is mixed and you were planning to walk in on a list, that shapes the decision before anything about music or atmosphere does. Tell us the group composition early and we will tell you what each venue actually costs you.

Nights

Rumour runs Wednesday to Saturday, 11pm to 4am. Tape runs its own pattern with later finishes on its biggest nights. If your group wants to go properly late, check the specific date rather than assuming the two match.

The Verdict

Choose Rumour if you want a small, dressed-up room where the night is about your group, if the table is the centre of the evening, or if bigger clubs have felt impersonal.

Choose Tape if you want scale and a sound system, if the music policy matters more than the room, or if your group is large enough that 200 capacity starts to feel tight.

And if you are deciding for a mixed group on a budget, start with the guestlist question rather than the vibe — it is the one that actually changes the maths.

Location and Getting Home

Both sit in the same part of Mayfair and both are well served — Green Park and Bond Street cover either, and the area has enough traffic that a cab is straightforward at any hour. Neither is a destination trip in the way a south London superclub is.

The difference is what is around them. Dover Street puts Rumour minutes from a dense run of bars and restaurants, which makes building an evening around it easy and gives you alternatives if the night changes shape. That flexibility matters more when the venue itself is small.

Which for Which Occasion

For a birthday with a group of six to twelve who want to stay together, Rumour. The room makes a celebration feel like it belongs to the night rather than competing with it, and the table becomes the centre of the evening rather than a base you keep losing people from.

For a bigger group, or one where people want to drift and find their own night, Tape. Scale is a feature when the group is large — there is room for different people to want different things without anyone being stuck.

For a first big night out in London, I would usually say Tape, because the scale and the sound are the thing visitors remember. For a second or third, when someone has done the large rooms and wants something that feels less public, Rumour is the better answer.

Doing Both

They are close enough to do in one night, and plenty of groups do — start at one, move to the other. If that appeals, tell us and we will sequence it so the doors line up and you are not arriving somewhere at its most difficult hour. It is the kind of thing that works smoothly when arranged and badly when improvised at 1am.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which is better for a birthday?

Rumour for a smaller group that wants the table to be the night. Tape for a bigger group that wants scale and a dancefloor.

Which has the stricter dress code?

Both are smart Mayfair doors. Rumour's is applied more consistently simply because the room is small enough that it can be.

Can men get on the guestlist at Rumour?

No. Rumour's guestlist is for ladies; groups of men and mixed groups need a table.

Which is cheaper?

It depends on your group. Rumour's tables start from £1,000; for a group of ladies the guestlist can make it very cheap indeed. Send us the group and the date and we will compare properly.

Still deciding between the two? Tell us the occasion, the group and the date and we will point you at the right door. message us on WhatsApp and we will take it from there.
