THE MF NIGHTS PLAYBOOK

THE LONDON
CLUBBING GUIDE

Everything you need to know before a night out in London. From getting on the guestlist to booking a VIP table, door policy to dress codes — this is the insider playbook for doing it right.

HOW LONDON NIGHTLIFE WORKS

What to expect before you go out

London nightlife operates differently from most cities. The biggest clubs in Mayfair, Soho, and the West End are not walk-up venues where you queue and pay at the door. Most operate on a combination of guestlist entry and table bookings, and the door policy is taken seriously.

Understanding how this system works before you go out will save you time, money, and the frustration of being turned away. The clubs featured on our site — venues like Tape London, Cirque Le Soir, Maddox, and Reign — all follow this model.

The two main ways to get into a London nightclub are the guestlist and a table booking (also called bottle service). Each has different benefits, and the right option depends on your group, your budget, and what kind of night you want.

Most high-end London clubs are not first-come-first-served. Planning ahead — even just getting on a guestlist — dramatically improves your night.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT VENUE

Not every club is the same

London has hundreds of clubs, but the experience varies enormously. A night at a Mayfair members-style club is a completely different experience from a superclub in South London. Choosing the right venue for your group is one of the most important decisions you will make.

Consider these factors when picking a venue:

MUSIC & VIBE

Hip hop, house, RnB, mixed — every venue leans a certain way. Check before you book.

GROUP SIZE & MAKEUP

Some venues suit intimate groups, others handle large parties. Gender ratio matters at most Mayfair doors.

BUDGET

Guestlist is free. Table minimums vary from around £1,000 to well over £5,000 depending on venue and night.

OCCASION

Birthdays, celebrations, and corporate events all suit different venues. Some clubs specialise in shows and packages.

Not sure which venue fits? That is exactly what we help with. Message us on WhatsApp with your date, group size, and vibe and we will recommend the best option.

GUESTLIST VS TABLE BOOKING

Two ways in, very different experiences

This is the most important distinction in London nightlife. Both get you through the door, but the experience is completely different.

GUESTLIST

  • Free or reduced entry
  • Access to a promoter’s shared table
  • Complimentary drinks (venue dependent)
  • No minimum spend
  • Great for ladies and mixed groups

Guestlist is the best option if you want a great night without spending on bottle service. It is primarily available for ladies and mixed groups. All-male groups typically need a table booking.

JOIN A GUESTLIST →

TABLE BOOKING

  • Guaranteed entry for your entire group
  • Your own private table and seating area
  • Dedicated host and bottle service
  • Choose your bottles and drinks from the menu
  • Perfect for birthdays, events, and celebrations

Table bookings come with a minimum spend. You choose what to order and pay at the end of the night. Mixers, ice, and garnishes are included. There is no upfront cost to book.

BOOK A TABLE →

Not sure which is right for your group? As a general rule: if your group is mostly or all female, guestlist is great. If you have a mixed or all-male group, or you want a guaranteed private experience, go for a table.

DRESS CODE

What to wear and what to avoid

Dress code is one of the main reasons people get turned away at London clubs. Mayfair venues enforce a smart dress code, and the door staff will not make exceptions. Getting this right is non-negotiable.

WHAT WORKS

FOR MEN

  • Smart shoes (leather, suede, loafers)
  • Tailored trousers or smart jeans (dark, no rips)
  • Collared shirt or smart fitted top
  • Blazer or smart jacket (optional but helps)

FOR WOMEN

  • Heels or smart evening boots
  • Dress, skirt, or stylish tailored outfit
  • Smart separates with elevated accessories

WHAT GETS YOU TURNED AWAY

  • Trainers — even expensive designer pairs
  • Sportswear, hoodies, or tracksuits
  • Ripped jeans or overly casual denim
  • Shorts, flip-flops, or open-toe sandals (men)
  • Heavy coats or bulky bags (use the cloakroom)
  • Fancy dress or costumes (unless it’s a themed night)

The golden rule: when in doubt, overdress. It is always better to be slightly too smart than slightly too casual. Door staff make instant decisions and rarely change their minds.

Each venue has its own nuances. Some clubs are stricter than others. If you are unsure, check our venue pages or ask us before the night and we will give you venue-specific advice.

DOOR POLICY & GETTING IN

What the door is actually looking for

The door at a London club is not just checking your outfit. They are managing the atmosphere of the entire venue. Understanding what they look for will help you avoid being turned away.

Physical ID is essential. Every venue in London requires photo ID. A passport or UK driving licence is accepted everywhere. Some clubs accept other photo ID but many do not. Digital ID on your phone is almost never accepted. Do not leave home without a physical ID.

Do not arrive drunk. This is one of the fastest ways to get refused. Door staff are trained to spot intoxication, and they will not let you in regardless of your booking. Pre-drinks are fine, but know your limits and stay composed when you arrive.

Group composition matters. Most Mayfair clubs pay close attention to the gender balance of groups entering. All-male groups without a table booking will struggle at most exclusive venues. Mixed groups and female groups have a much easier time. This is not about discrimination — it is how these clubs manage their atmosphere.

Be polite and confident. The door team has full discretion. Being rude, aggressive, or overly pushy will get you turned away instantly. Be respectful, give your name clearly if you are on the guestlist, and let them do their job.

TOP REASONS PEOPLE GET TURNED AWAY

  • No physical photo ID
  • Visibly intoxicated
  • Wrong dress code (trainers, sportswear, ripped jeans)
  • All-male group with no booking
  • Rude or aggressive behaviour toward door staff
  • Arriving too late when the venue is at capacity
  • Not on any guestlist or booking with no prior arrangement

Being on a guestlist or having a table booking signals to the door that you are expected. This alone significantly improves your chances of a smooth entry — it is one of the main reasons getting on a guestlist is always worth it, even if entry is free anyway.

TIMING & ARRIVAL

When to arrive and why it matters

Timing is one of the most underrated factors in having a good night out. Most London clubs open between 10pm and 11pm, and the guestlist window — the period when guestlist entry is honoured — is typically from opening until around midnight or 12:30am.

Arrive early. This sounds counterintuitive if you are used to turning up late, but arriving within the first hour of opening is one of the best things you can do. The queue is shorter, the door is more relaxed, and you are far more likely to get in smoothly. By 1am, many venues are at or near capacity and guestlist entry may be closed.

If you have a table booking, your arrival time will usually be agreed in advance. Stick to it. Arriving very late to a table booking can cause complications, and some venues may give your table away if you do not show.

TIMING GUIDE

10:30pm – 11:00pmDoors open at most venues. Best time to arrive on guestlist.
11:00pm – 12:00amGuestlist window. Arrive during this period for the smoothest entry.
12:00am – 1:00amPeak arrival. Queues build, guestlist may start closing.
After 1:00amMany venues near capacity. Guestlist entry unlikely. Table bookings still honoured.
3:00am – 6:00amMost clubs close between 3am and 4am. Late-night venues run later.

HOW TABLE BOOKINGS WORK

What to expect when you book a table

A table booking (or bottle service) gives you your own reserved space in the club with a dedicated host. It is the premium way to experience a London club and the only way to guarantee entry for everyone in your group.

Here is how the process works from start to finish:

01

ENQUIRE

Message us with your date, group size, preferred venue, and any special requests. There is no cost to enquire.

02

GET A QUOTE

We confirm the minimum spend, table options, and any extras. Minimum spends depend on the venue, the night, the table location, and the group size.

03

CONFIRM

Once you are happy, we lock in your booking with the venue. No payment is needed upfront.

04

ARRIVE

On the night, arrive at the agreed time. Give your name at the door and your host will take you to your table.

05

ENJOY & PAY

Order your bottles and drinks throughout the night. Payment is made by card at the end of the evening to meet your minimum spend.

Why use a promoter like Mayfair Nights? We handle the communication with the venue, confirm your booking, and make sure you get the best deal available. Our service is completely free — we earn our commission from the venue, not from you. That means you get the same (or better) prices as going direct, with none of the hassle.

A good promoter also gives you honest advice. If a venue is not right for your group, we will tell you and suggest something better. Our reputation depends on you having a good night, not just on making a booking.

Get in touch with your requirements and we will handle everything. No upfront payment, no booking fees, just a better night out.

BIRTHDAYS & CELEBRATIONS

Making a celebration night go smoothly

London clubs are one of the best places to celebrate a birthday, graduation, promotion, or any special occasion. Many venues offer dedicated birthday packages that go well beyond just a table.

Depending on the venue, birthday packages can include cake, sparklers, champagne shows, LED signs, confetti drops, and personalised shout-outs from the DJ. Some of these are included free with a table booking, while others are add-on extras.

Here are some tips for making a celebration night work:

  • Book early — birthday tables at popular venues fill up fast, especially on Fridays and Saturdays
  • Let us know it’s a celebration when you enquire so we can arrange extras
  • Confirm your group size as accurately as possible — this affects the table and minimum spend
  • Ask about cake and sparkler options — many venues provide these at no extra cost
  • Consider a pre-drinks or dinner plan to start the night before heading to the club
  • Designate someone to handle logistics so the birthday person can enjoy the night

We organise birthday packages regularly and can put together a full plan for your night — from dinner to club to after-party. Reach out to us via our contact page or WhatsApp and tell us what you have in mind.

ROOKIE MISTAKES TO AVOID

What experienced clubbers never do

Even people who go out regularly make avoidable mistakes. Here are the most common ones we see — and how to avoid them.

Showing up without any plan

Always get on a guestlist or book a table, even if the venue technically allows walk-ins. Being expected makes everything smoother.

Arriving after midnight on guestlist

Guestlist windows close early. Aim to arrive between 11pm and midnight. After that, you may be treated as a walk-in.

Wearing trainers to a Mayfair club

Even expensive trainers get turned away. Smart shoes every time. No exceptions.

Leaving your ID at home

No ID, no entry. It does not matter how old you look. Bring a physical passport or driving licence.

Arriving visibly drunk

Pre-drinks are fine, but showing up slurring or stumbling is a guaranteed refusal. Stay composed.

Bringing a large all-male group with no booking

Book a table or ensure your group is mixed. All-male groups without a booking almost never get into Mayfair clubs on guestlist alone.

Arguing with the door staff

The door team has the final say. Being polite and respectful is the only approach that works. Arguing guarantees you will not get in.

Not checking the venue’s vibe or music

A house music club is very different from a hip-hop club. Check what the venue plays before you book so there are no surprises.

SAFETY & PRACTICAL TIPS

Common sense for a better night

London is a safe city for nightlife, but common sense goes a long way. Mayfair in particular is one of the safest areas to go out, with high police presence, well-lit streets, and clubs that take security seriously. That said, a few practical tips will help you avoid problems.

  • Keep your phone, wallet, and valuables secure at all times — use inside pockets or a small bag
  • Use the cloakroom for coats and bags rather than leaving them on tables or the floor
  • Stick together with your group and agree on a meeting point in case you get separated
  • Watch your drinks and never leave them unattended
  • Do not accept drinks from strangers
  • Plan your journey home before you go out — book a ride-hailing app or know the night bus routes
  • Mayfair is very walkable between venues, but use well-lit main roads if walking late at night
  • Stay hydrated — alternate drinks with water throughout the night
  • If something does not feel right, tell a member of staff or security immediately
  • Most London clubs accept cards only — cash bars are rare, but having some cash for tips or cloakroom is useful

PRE-NIGHT CHECKLIST

Run through this before you leave the house

  • Guestlist confirmed or table booked
  • Physical photo ID (passport or driving licence)
  • Dress code checked for the specific venue
  • Arrival time agreed with your group (aim for 11pm–12am)
  • Phone charged
  • Journey home planned (Uber, taxi, night bus)
  • Venue address saved on your phone
  • Cash for cloakroom and tips (most clubs are card-only for drinks)
  • Everyone in the group knows the plan
  • Birthday extras arranged if it’s a celebration

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Common questions about London nightlife, guestlists, and table bookings

Getting on a guestlist through a promoter like Mayfair Nights is completely free. There is no charge to enquire or to be added. Some venues may still have a reduced cover charge on the door, but many offer free entry for guestlist guests.
Not necessarily. Guestlist entry is available at most venues for ladies and mixed groups. However, a table booking guarantees entry for everyone in your group regardless of gender ratio, and gives you a private area with bottle service.
Minimum spends vary by venue, night, and table location. They typically start from around £1,000 on quieter nights and can be significantly higher on peak nights or for premium table positions. Contact us for exact pricing.
All-male groups will find guestlist entry very difficult at most Mayfair venues. The most reliable option is booking a table, which guarantees entry. Alternatively, attending as part of a mixed group significantly improves your chances.
Most Mayfair clubs close between 3am and 4am. Some venues like Tape London and Maddox stay open until 5am or 6am on certain nights. Ministry of Sound and a few late-night venues can go even later.
Most Mayfair clubs do not allow trainers, even designer ones. Some venues are more relaxed, but the safest approach is always smart shoes. If in doubt, leave the trainers at home.
The legal minimum is 18, and all clubs require valid photo ID. Some exclusive venues informally prefer an older crowd (21+), but the official entry age across London is 18.
A good promoter saves you time and improves your night. They handle guestlist placement, table bookings, and venue communication so you do not have to. Their services are typically free to the customer — they earn commission from the venue.
