London Clubs Dress Code - Insider Tips from Experienced London Promoters

Updated: Aug 6, 2023

London club dress codes can be a lot to take in sometimes. After all, it’s not easy to tell what certain terms, like dress to impress, mean exactly. It can also be quite frustrating since your entire night could depend on what you’re wearing. If you’ve been around the Mayfair nightlife scene for as long as we have, you’d know that some clubs have really strict door policies.

If you often find yourself unsure of what to wear to a London club or if you often end up on Google, asking question after question about dress codes, this article is for you.

We’ll tell you everything you need to know about London club dress codes. We'll also make sure we mention policies for essential hotspots, like the Tape London dress code, and the Box Soho dress code.

London Clubs Dress Code for Women

Ladies tend to have the hardest time with club dress codes given that female fashion is far more complex than male fashion.

The trick to understanding dress codes is thinking about what you can’t wear rather than what you can. Once you exclude obvious faux pas, you won’t feel overwhelmed by the many available outfits and combinations.

Fortunately, most exclusive London clubs and trendy restaurants already make it simple enough by sticking to one of two dress codes: smart and elegant or dress to impress.

The Tape London dress code is smart and elegant. Meaning that you can’t wear sports attire, beachwear, shorts, or visible underwear.

Instead, the smart elegant dress code for women means you can wear:

  • Elegant tops

  • Elegant trousers

  • Blazers

  • Skirts

  • Mini-dresses

  • Dresses

  • Heels

The Proud Embankment dress code, on the other hand, is dress to impress. When it relates to clothing, the dress code is almost identical to the smart and elegant. The real difference is in the little details and your overall look.

The dress to impress dress code means don’t just put on an elegant outfit. You’ve got to make it pop through subtle elements, like jewellery, purses, make-up, elegant shawls or wraps, etc. Most importantly, don’t forget to be your authentic self.

London Club Dress Code for Men

When it comes to gents, abiding by a London club dress code is not at all complex. Again, it’s more about what you shouldn’t wear.

A smart elegant dress code means you can’t wear casual shoes, shorts and casual pants, and obvious fouls, like tank tops, slippers, sandals, beachwear, and sports attire.

However, the smart elegant dress code for men means you should wear:

  • Dress shirts

  • Elegant long-sleeve shirts

  • Smart trousers

  • Blazers

  • Smart shoes

You can also opt for a clean look with an elegant solid-coloured t-shirt. Of course, a clean look is the keyword here so make sure your overall look reflects this clean, simple, elegance.

What to Wear if you Don’t Know the Dress Code?

The most obvious answer would be to call the club or restaurant and they’ll tell you. However, most likely, their answer will be generic and you won’t be able to get into the particulars if they’re busy or understaffed.

Your best bet would be to contact us and we’ll tell you exactly what you should wear to get into the London club of your choice. With us, you’ll be able to ask as many questions as you want and we’ll relieve your anxieties and do our best to prevent any mishaps at the door.

That said, the most common London club dress code is smart and elegant. So, you’ll always have a better chance if you’re dressed elegantly. Remember, it’s better to be overdressed than underdressed.

Keep in mind that there are some exceptions, though. The Box Soho dress code, for example, is relatively non-existent. The venue cares little about how you’re dressed and more about who you are and what you add to the club.

Meanwhile, the Bob Bob Ricard dress code is elegant which means you won’t have the leeway of wearing elegant tops and pants instead of dresses or elegant t-shirts instead of dress shirts.
